Residents Prefer Stroll to a Walk

Residents of Dubai walk only half the distance they ought to for maintaining fitness, but around 90 per cent of residents would prefer to take a stroll if there were more shaded streets and parks in the vicinity, according to a survey by a real estate company.

The survey, conducted by Limitless, the global business unit of Dubai World, also found that at least one in 20 people surveyed rarely take a stroll at all.

Filipinos register for overseas voting

Many Filipino expatriates said they are registering as 'Overseas Absentee Voters (OAVs)' to be a part of the possible changes through democratic process back home.

"I would like to vote in the next general elections to help fulfil my dreams about the country," said Aprilvin Marie Borromeo, a technical assistant who is going to exercise her franchise for the first time.

She said Filipinos have freedom under a democratic system. "But I think, we will have total freedom when all Filipinos will be able to find livelihood at home," she said.

Scott says the House of Illusions, a show specially created for DSS, is incomparable to anything Dubai has seen: In between disappearing illusionists, bottles appearing out of thin air and a tauntingly hilarious clown, guests are served a three-course meal by waiters more attentive than those in the Beauty and the Beast crockery sequence.

The House of Illusions features Romany, the diva of mystery, who has performed for the Queen of England. She is joined by the international illusionist Andrew Van Buren and local Arabic band Breeze.

As you enjoy the culinary delights of Dish Catering, you can expect to be thrilled by the magic of Romany, who goes from table to table performing rope and card tricks.

The show also caters for children with a kids' menu available for kids between 4 and 12 years (children under 4 are not allowed).

Dubai Golf Launches Summer Open Series

Wednesday 3 rd June 2009 ~ Dubai Golf will host a summer series of Open events for Male and Female amateur golfers over the summer months encompassing the Majlis, Faldo and Dubai Creek courses.

Dubai Golf is delighted to announce a Summer Series of Open Tournaments taking place at the Majlis, Faldo and Dubai Creek courses for Male and Female amateur golfers from throughout the UAE.

Ping, Titleist, Ecco, Adidas and Etihad Airways will support the six event series that will be a stableford format off 3⁄4 handicap allowance. Competitors can enter between one and five events however to qualify for the Grand Final on Saturday 5 th September over the Majlis course, they will need to compete in at least 3 events. Those 96 competitors with the lowest stableford point tally for their three best rounds will compete in the series finale.

The first event will take place at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club on Saturday 27 th June in a 13:30 shotgun start. The Faldo course, recent host to the Dubai Golf Trophy, will be the venue for the second fixture on Saturday 4 th July with Dubai Creek hosting again on the 25th July.

The Majlis course enters the swing on Saturday 8 th August with the Faldo entertaining the final fixture in the qualifying process on Saturday 29 th August.

“We, at Dubai Golf, want to ensure that those residents staying in Dubai over the summer still have an active calendar of golfing events that they can participate in. With an event like this, there is absolutely no reason for a golfer’s clubs to be forced into the cupboard over the next few months,” stated Rod Bogg, Managing Director of Dubai Golf.

Professionals Earn Victory in Dubai Golf Trophy

Sunday 31st May 2009 ~ between the top 16 UAE PGA Professionals and the leading 16 Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) Amateur golfers. The Professionals were made to work hard in the 16 singles matches to clinch victory in the 10th edition of the Dubai golf Trophy. The professional outfit went into the final day with a slender one-point lead but coped superbly with the pressure of winning their 8th title over the magnificent Faldo course with an overall tally of 17.5 points to the Amateurs 14.5.

Malcolm Young from Arabian Ranches Golf Club drained the winning putt on the 17th green against Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club’s Dino Varkey, by doing so Young completed a 100% record for the event with 3 wins out of three.

The opening nine singles matches were shared intensifying the pressure for those competitors at the tail of the line-up. The juniors on the amateur team yet again produced impressive performances with victories for Matthew Turner, Joel Neale, Khalid Yousuf and Sean Thornberry with Ahmed Al Musharrekh claiming a comprehensive victory over Steve Munroe 7 & 6.

The professionals rose to the challenge and recorded 4.5 points from the final five encounters with wins for Steve Chambers, Malcolm Young, David Gray and Stuart Fee. Cyril Rozes and Alex Charwani from Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club shared a point in a hugely social yet competitive match that epitomises this great event.

Justin Parsons, Professional Captain, was delighted to keep his hands on the trophy following an intense final day in stifling conditions.

The stand out performers over the two days were Malcolm Young (Arabian Ranches), Nick Oakley (Emirates Golf Club), Joel Neale and Khalid Yousuf both from Emirates Golf Club following their 100% records in the three match series.

The UAE’s best Professionals and Amateurs battle it out again in the annual Dubai Golf Trophy

Monday 25th May 2009 ~ The highly anticipated event between the top 16 UAE PGA Professionals and the leading 16 Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) Amateur golfers takes place again on the Faldo course at Emirates Golf Club, on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st May 2009.

The players go head-to-head in a Ryder Cup-style showdown to see who will claim the coveted tenth edition of the Dubai Golf Trophy 2009, which was conceptualised by the first Director of Golf for Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, Peter Downie (now the General Manager of Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore) as a social season-ender in 2000. Since then, the tournament has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the highlights on the professionals and amateurs’ calendar, the current scoreboard reading 7 – 2 to the Professionals, with the Amateurs claiming victory in 2005 and 2007.
