Green buildings could save 40 per cent of energy and water consumption

Dubai: turning a building in an energy efficiency should not be considered an act of charity but as a solution to climate change, experts on Wednesday at a conference of green building.
Emissions from buildings have grown exponentially in the last 2 years
compared with the industry and transport, said Parasu Raman, Vice
President founder of the Ecumenical Council of the green building.
"Because we were unable to build what we have achieved in other areas
... At the end of the day the construction industry is a capital market
and that there is profit-oriented, but this does not mean that the
environment must abuse "Says Raman.
Green buildings on average, savings of up to 40 percent of the energy
and water consumption and reduce waste generation by 40 percent.
"Other industries are healthy and controlled, but not the construction
industry ... This is a fragmented industry and therefore has not
responded to the call so quickly," says Raman.
Until now, although more than 50 green buildings registered in the
United Arab Emirates, since the first three, when His Highness Sheikh
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of
UAE and ruler of Dubai, announced that all buildings must be in line
with the rules of sustainable January 2008.
Peter Mench, GTZ, a society of sustainable development with its
headquarters in Abu Dhabi, stressed the urgent need for the consumption
of water more efficiently as a whole, especially in the cities of Abu
Dhabi, including the current inventory of the drinking water only in
the last three days Event of a crisis.
"The development is accelerating and that means that takes its water
recycling and reuse of water must be looked into the other Emirates
would be a crisis situation. I am convinced that the government is
doing everything that needs to be done," Mench said.
It is estimated that by the year 2032 with the continuous development,
the United Arab Emirates capital had a population of more than 4.5
million people.
The climate in this region, a building code for buildings based on
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) ratings plan was
developed to the contractors.
Jeff Willis, director of Arup Middle East and coordinator of the
Technical Committee of the Emirates Building Council, said that the
original scoring system has been adapted and has since imposed by the
United States LEED system to facilitate the construction in many
climate zones in the United States.
"We have some preconditions for the UAE LEED-point system, there is not
anywhere else, but it must be done for the certification of each
level," said Willis. The conditions are mainly for water conservation
and recycling.
As for building materials, a change was made to allow the materials
come from the 600 miles from any port, and then by ship to the United
Arab Emirates, and not only within 600 miles. "That would be
unattainable and therefore has changed. We are maintaining the
principles, but this makes it useful to the United Arab Emirates," he
said.
Green Buildings Conference continues through Thursday at the American University in Dubai.
