You may have a vision in your head of men clad in white robes (‘dishdasha’) and women in black, but here in Dubai, the locals take such simple dress to a whole new level. Intricate embroidery and beautiful designs are what you see the Emarati women wearing in Dubai. Often times, the abayas and sheilas (black robe and head scarf) that they wear are so colourful and flashy, that you can’t help but admire them. That’s not to mention the designer branding that some of them sport: everything from Louis Vuitton to Burberry. Keep in mind that their conservative dress has nothing to do with male dominance, as many people in the west would assume. It’s actually a combination of respect for their religion as well as a deeply rooted tradition.
Although it’s the Emarati women that take centre stage when it comes to fashion, men do make a debut. The men here have a variety of luxurious textiles to choose from, as well as the opportunity to get their dishdashas tailor made. You may also notice that they aren’t all white and that colours such as beige, brown, and dark blue are also popular. Add a traditional guthra (male headscarf) and a pair of premium leather na’al (traditional male sandals), and you’ve got yourself an image of the perfect Emarati man.
