What to Wear
What to WearYES, the UAE is a Muslim country. And, YES, you should respect the local religion at all times. HOWEVER, Dubai is probably the most lenient destination in the Middle East when it comes to rules and regulation on many issues, including dress. The locals here are used to having expatriates around and have become more or less accustomed to their ways. The weather is hot for most of the year and it’s quite acceptable to leave your house wearing shorts and a sleeveless top. Swimsuits and even bikinis are fine as long as you’re at the beach or by the swimming pool. On the other hand, going to the mall with short shorts or sun bathing topless on the beach is a definite no-no.

There is one more thing that you may want to keep in mind while packing your bags: Western expatriates (Americans, Australians, British, etc.) only make up about 3% of Dubai’s population. The remainder of the population is generally accustomed to a more conservative dress code. For your own comfort and peace of mind, we recommend that you dress as modestly as you feel comfortable doing.
